Almost everything written about wildfire and exteriors is about getting ready. Far less is written about the pass that matters just as much: walking the house **after** the season, when the heat is gone and whatever happened has already happened. A house does not have to have been near a fire to have taken something from the season — ember fall travels, smoke deposits, retardant drifts, and a summer of extreme heat is itself a load on a wall. This guide is a walkthrough: what to look at, what each finding usually means, and — the part that matters most — where the honest boundary sits between an observation you can make from the ground and a diagnosis that needs the wall opened.
Start with the horizontal surfaces that collect
Embers do not land evenly; they collect where something stops them. The first pass is therefore about **accumulation** rather than damage. Gutters and roof valleys. The gap between a deck board and a wall. Window and door sills. The top of a horizontal trim board. Behind a downspout. Under the first course of siding where it meets a hardscape. What you are looking for is debris that arrived and stayed — needles, leaves, char flecks — because that is both a fire-season risk for next year and a moisture problem this winter. This is also the least glamorous and highest-value thing on the list: the material sitting in those places is what a future ember would land in. Clearing it is maintenance rather than repair, and it costs nothing but an afternoon.
Ember scars and what they actually look like
An ember that landed and went out usually leaves a small, discrete mark rather than dramatic damage: a shallow scorch or a pinhead-sized pit on a painted surface, a darkened spot on a horizontal ledge, a melted or deformed patch on a vinyl or plastic component, a scorched screen. On **fiber cement** the board itself is noncombustible, but the paint or factory finish on it is not — a scorch mark means the coating took heat, which is a coating question rather than a substrate one. On **wood** trim or fascia, a scorch means the material itself charred, which is different and worth a closer look. On **vinyl**, deformation is the signature. Two or three scattered marks is a normal record of a smoky season in fire country; a concentrated cluster on one elevation is telling you where the ember wash came from, and it is worth remembering when you plan hardening work.
Vents and screens — the highest-consequence check
If you do only one thing on this list, do this one. Vents are the most common way embers get inside a building, and a screen that has been damaged, deformed, corroded, painted over, or simply pushed out of position is a defect with a very high consequence relative to its size. Walk every vent you can reach: eave and soffit vents, gable vents, foundation and crawl vents, dryer and bath exhaust terminations, and any attic vent visible from the ground. You are checking that the screen is **intact, in place and not blocked** — blocked matters too, because a vent that no longer ventilates creates a moisture problem in the attic even while it keeps embers out. Smoke film and retardant residue
Smoke deposits a film on exterior surfaces that is mostly a cleaning question, not a damage one — but it is worth removing rather than leaving, because it is acidic on some surfaces and it holds moisture. Fire retardant, if any drifted onto your property, is a different case: it is a salt-based material, manufacturers publish their own cleaning guidance, and it should be rinsed off rather than left to sit — particularly on metal components and glazing. Heat and UV, which do more than fire does most years
In the great majority of Northern California seasons, the wall's real load was heat rather than flame. These are the findings that most often turn into actual work, and they are seasonal and cumulative rather than dramatic. A wall that shows the same finding in the same place three years running is telling you about the exposure, not about the year.
The line between a symptom and a diagnosis
This is the part we would ask you to take seriously, because it is where post-fire content usually oversteps. Everything above is an **observation**: something visible from outside that can be described honestly. What none of it establishes is the condition of the sheathing, the framing, or the weather-resistive barrier behind the cladding — and that is where the consequential damage lives. A scorch mark tells you heat reached a surface; it does not tell you whether anything behind it was affected. Softness at a fascia or a sill is a stronger signal, and it warrants opening a small area rather than guessing. **Any of the following moves it from observation to inspection**: soft or spongy material under gentle probe pressure, staining that appears on the inside of a wall, a vent or opening where you can see past the screen, char on a structural element rather than on a finish, or damage concentrated in one area rather than scattered.
