Every exterior consultation reaches the same fork. You can do the whole envelope at once — siding, windows, trim, soffit, gutters — as one coordinated project, or you can take it a piece at a time as budget allows. Contractors have an obvious commercial preference here, so it is worth saying plainly that both approaches are legitimate and the right answer depends on facts about your house and your finances rather than on a rule. What is not a matter of preference is where the two approaches genuinely differ, and it is not mainly price. It is the **interfaces** — the places where two systems meet — because those are what a package controls and piecemeal work repeatedly disturbs.
The real argument for a package: interfaces, not discounts
A wall is not a set of independent products. The window flange laps into the weather-resistive barrier; the barrier laps over the head flashing; the siding laps over both; the trim covers the joint; the gutter takes what the roof sheds past all of it. Those laps are the assembly. When one system is replaced in isolation, the installer has to cut into finished work and weave new flashing behind material that is already lapped over it — which can be done well and frequently is not. A package builds every interface once, in the right order, with the wall open. That is the substantive benefit, and it is worth more than any bundling discount a contractor will offer you.
What a package actually costs less of
Be specific, because vagueness here is how people get oversold. A package saves **mobilisation** — one set-up, one site protection, one clean-up. It saves **access**: scaffolding, lifts and staging set once rather than three times, which on a two-storey or hillside lot is a real number. It saves **one weather window** rather than several, which matters in a region with a genuine working season. It saves **your** coordination time, which has a value even if it never appears on an invoice. And it avoids **rework**: the cost of cutting back into finished cladding to set windows later, or re-trimming after a gutter change. What it does **not** save is material or the labour of the surfaces themselves. If a bundled bid shows a large discount, ask which of those lines it is coming from — the honest answer is usually access and mobilisation, and that is a bounded amount.
The real argument for piecemeal: it is not just money
Piecemeal gets dismissed too quickly. It lets you **spend against failure** rather than against a plan — replacing what is actually failing, when it fails, instead of replacing serviceable systems because they happened to be adjacent. It keeps the **decision reversible**: if you are not certain you are staying, or the neighbourhood is changing, or your taste on colour is unsettled, a smaller commitment now preserves optionality. It avoids **financing** a project you could otherwise pay for from cash flow, which for many households is the single largest cost avoided. And it lets you **test a contractor** on a small scope before handing them the whole envelope — a genuinely underrated benefit, and one we would encourage rather than argue against. The sequencing rule that makes piecemeal work
If you are going piecemeal, the order still matters, and getting it wrong is what turns a reasonable strategy into an expensive one. Water runs downhill, and each layer sheds onto the one below, so the sequence runs **roof → windows (flashed and integrated) → siding → trim and gutters → paint**. The framing that resolves most of these conversations is that you do not have to choose between 'everything now' and 'one thing at a time'. You can package the parts that **share an interface** and phase the parts that do not. Siding and windows share an interface and should move together. Siding and trim share one. Roof and the top course of siding share one. When a package is clearly right
Some situations settle the question. **Multiple systems are failing at once** — this is common on 1970s–90s housing stock where everything was built at the same time and ages at the same time. **You are re-siding anyway and the windows are original**: the wall will never be this open again, and doing windows later means paying to reopen it. **The parcel is in a designated fire zone** and the work triggers WUI code obligations, because compliance is an assembly question — cladding, eaves, vents and openings together — and a half-hardened envelope is a poor result at any price. **You are preparing to sell** on a defined timeline, where a coherent exterior reads very differently from a patchwork. And **access is expensive** — steep lots, three storeys, difficult staging — because that is exactly the cost a package amortises.
When piecemeal is clearly right
